A staggering 97% of those living with HIV/AIDS reside in low and middle income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (aids.gov). In Zambia, 13.5% of adults are living with HIV/AIDS, the 6th highest rate of adults living with HIV/AIDS in the world (www.cia.gov). The AIDS epidemic has left millions of children orphaned and homeless, and many vulnerable children have been infected due to lack of resources and lack of knowledge on prevention.
Although HIV/AIDS has remained a dire issue in Zambia, thanks to organizations like our partner: the Kabwata Orphanage and Transit Center, so much is being done to combat the effects of HIV/AIDS in high risk communities. The increased support to those affected by HIV/AIDS has had tremendous impacts for the people of Zambia. In less than a decade, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Zambia has decreased from 16.5% to 13.5%, and the life expectancy has almost doubled from 33 to 52 years.
|Children of the Kabwata Transit Centre are happy and healthy thanks to the generosity of Bread and Water for Africa supporters!|
We believe the continued efforts of organizations like the Kabwata Orphanage and Transit Centre to care for AIDS orphans and spread HIV/AIDS awareness through their community outreach programs have directly contributed to the decline in HIV/AIDS in Zambia, but we know there is still so much more than can be done. But how can we help?
The Kabwata Orphanage and Transit Centre was founded in 1998 by Angela Miyanda to provide children who had been orphaned and abandoned due to AIDS with a home, education and most importantly with care. Today, the Kabwata Orphanage and Transit Centre has expanded to provide over 400 children with basic support of housing, food, education and skills training and provides healthcare for the residents of the Kaweza District in Zambia. The Kabwata Orphanage and Transit Centre clinic provides healthcare and the necessary care for those with HIV/AIDS and holds educational sessions to increase awareness of the spread and prevention of HIV/AIDS, with the hopes of shifting the attitude towards HIV/AIDS to help eradicate HIV/AIDS.
