Many years ago, a woman named Ballu came to Mamie after hearing of the high quality care provided by the clinics. Ballu was facing severe pregnancy complications that could have proved fatal, but thanks to Mamie and her nurses Ballu delivered a healthy baby girl. Ballu’s daughter, Hawa, is now a grown woman living far away in the city of Freetown – but for her medical care she prefers to return to the clinic that saved her mother’s life and delivered her safely into the world.
We don’t always realize how blessed we are that our mothers have access to prenatal services and a hospital to deliver their babies in. In Sierra Leone, most women give birth alone in their homes with no midwife or medical aid, which puts them at a serious risk for complications such as fistula and septic shock. Sadly, many women die during childbirth due to these complications and Sierra Leone notoriously boasts one of the lowest life expectancies in the world.
As we prepare to celebrate mothers next month, Bread and Water for Africa® wishes to recognize the efforts of our clinics in Sierra Leone that work to provide free basic pre and post natal healthcare for pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children in their own communities.
Our partner Faith Healing Development Organization’s ( FHDO) clinics in Kenema and Bunumbu, Sierra Leone are managed by a remarkable woman, Mamie Baindu, who will stop at nothing to providing pregnant and lactating women with services to ensure a safe delivery for mother and child, as well as post-delivery healthcare.

Today Mamie and her colleagues deliver up to 15 babies per month at their clinics, in addition to providing 24-hour emergency care to their surrounding communities.
