The Education Challenge Facing Africa
Africa has made meaningful progress in expanding access to education. According to UNICEF’s report on education in Africa, primary school completion increased from 52 percent in 2000 to 69 percent in 2022. Lower-secondary completion rose from 35 percent to 50 percent, while upper-secondary completion increased from 23 percent to 33 percent.
These gains are encouraging, but enormous challenges remain.
According to UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report, approximately 98 million children and youth in sub-Saharan Africa are out of school.
UNESCO also reports that nearly 90 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa cannot read and understand a simple text by age 10.
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics 2026 Education Data Refresh report indicates that only 29 percent of young people in sub-Saharan Africa complete upper-secondary education, compared with 62 percent globally. The report also notes that by the expected age to complete primary school, only about half of students achieve minimum proficiency in reading, while approximately 40 percent reach minimum proficiency in mathematics.
These statistics mean more than data; each number represents a child whose aspirations may be hindered or lost because of persistent obstacles such as poverty, hunger, conflict, gender inequality, educational expenses, and inadequate facilities. Various studies have documented these barriers, including UNICEF’s analysis of education in Africa.
Why Education Is Important to Africa’s Future
Education Helps Break the Cycle of Poverty
Education gives young people the knowledge and skills they need to pursue employment, establish businesses, earn income, and support their families. The World Bank identifies education as one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and promoting economic growth.
Education helps young people build confidence, literacy, numeracy, and the practical skills needed to pursue more productive, self-reliant lives. The importance of developing these foundational skills is emphasized in the October 2022 World Bank’s work to end learning poverty report.
Education Strengthens Health and Well-Being
Education plays a vital role in equipping children and adults with essential knowledge to address issues such as nutrition, sanitation, hygiene, disease prevention, reproductive health, and healthcare systems. UNESCO’s Health and Education Program highlights the link between educational achievement and better health outcomes, showing that access to quality education empowers people to make informed health decisions and ultimately improves public health. Healthy children also tend to attend school regularly and engage enthusiastically in their lessons, which significantly enhances children’s well-being and improves educational success.
Education Empowers Girls
Girls face significant educational challenges, including poverty, child marriage, and gender-based violence, as well as household responsibilities and lack of sanitation in schools. Thankfully, numerous studies highlight these issues, and UNICEF’s Girls’ Education Program is actively working to address and overcome these barriers. According to this report, 119 million girls worldwide are out of school. Only 49 percent of countries have achieved gender parity in primary education, 42 percent in lower-secondary education, and 24 percent in upper-secondary education.
Education can help girls gain knowledge, confidence, employable skills, and greater financial independence. The World Bank’s work on girls’ education report elucidates the benefits of educating girls, emphasizing its positive impact on individuals, families, communities, and national economies.
Education Builds Resilient Communities
Education equips individuals to contribute to their communities in essential roles, including educators, healthcare professionals, agriculturalists, entrepreneurs, engineers, and community leaders. The World Bank recognizes education as a foundation for building human capital and supporting long-term development.
Quality education is also central to the United Nations’ global development agenda. Sustainable Development Goal 4 calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for everyone.

Precious Dreams of Becoming a Teacher in Zimbabwe
In rural Zimbabwe, Bread and Water for Africa® collaborates with Shinga Development Trust to empower orphaned and vulnerable children, ensuring they stay in school and thrive through School Fees Assistance Programme.
For children from families facing financial challenges, school and examination fees can be overwhelming obstacles to their education. The Shinga program supports these students, allowing them to pursue their studies without fear of being forced to leave school because of unpaid fees. This initiative ensures that financial hardship does not hinder their learning journey, enabling them to thrive academically and continue their path toward a brighter future.

When Clean Water Restores Education in Ethiopia
Access to clean water and sanitation is essential to children’s health, dignity, attendance, and educational success. At Gena Memcha Primary School in Ethiopia, the lack of a working water well has challenged the school meal program. Students were tasked with bringing five liters of water daily, a burden of over 11 pounds.
This period was critical for the program, and Bread and Water for Africa® intervened effectively. The well was successfully repaired, reinstating access to clean water and enabling the resumption of the school feeding program. With clean water available on campus, students can concentrate more on their studies rather than being burdened by the need to search for water. This revitalization significantly supports their academic success.
This initiative underscores the intricate relationships among education and several critical determinants of child development. Access to clean water, adequate nutrition, proper sanitation, health services, and educational opportunities work synergistically to foster an environment conducive to optimal growth and learning for children.

Helping Children Continue Their Education in Tanzania
At Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage in Tanzania, educational assistance from Bread and Water for Africa® enables children facing financial hardship to continue their studies. The program's primary objective is to support eight high school students and 75 primary and junior high students by covering school fees, transportation, and other educational expenses.
With consistent educational support, students can improve their academic performance, stay enrolled in school, advance to higher education, and ultimately pursue vocational training, college, university, or gainful employment.
