As it was in the first year of the now 39-year history of Bread and Water for Africa® … CLEAN WATER CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR EMPHASIS OF OUR WORK.
It started with digging deep wells to bring water to villages without access to clean water in sub-Saharan African countries – and spread all over the continent – thanks to the steadfast support of good people like you.
For years, supporters have helped Bread and Water for Africa® dig new water wells, refurbish existing ones, protect springs, construct stream water diversion projects, and create reservoirs for agricultural projects.
More than four million people in Africa have benefited due to our clean water projects.
We have accomplished a lot of good, but even so, the World Health Organization says that still today, lack of clean water results in 115 deaths EVERY HOUR in sub-Saharan African countries.
According to the World Health Organization, there are 2.2 million diarrheal deaths related to unsafe water every year.
For example, in Zambia… about 4.8 million people do not have access to clean drinking-water sources. In rural areas of Zambia 182 in every 1000 children die before their 5th birthday.
In the rural villages of Zambia, it is not uncommon to see children walking more than six kilometers with a heavy bucket or 20-liter jerrycan on their heads.
They often drink water from a dirty puddle because they tire from having to walk the long distances to the nearest safe drinking water. These children try to filter the unclean water through their clothing in vain efforts to protect themselves from waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, and intestinal parasites.
That’s why our Clean Water Program, and the World Water Day Challenge, is vital, and even life-saving.
2025 Clean Water WASH Goals: At a Glance
Our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Program is transforming lives in sub-Saharan Africa by tackling critical sanitation and hygiene challenges. We build and restore wells, protect vital spring water sources, and construct latrines and toilet facilities in schools and villages—ensuring communities have reliable access to clean water. Equally important, we provide essential hygiene education, teaching families the life-saving practices of handwashing, safe water use, and disease prevention. These efforts not only safeguard African youth and families from waterborne illnesses but also empower them to focus on education, farming, and caring for their loved ones—building healthier, stronger communities for generations to come.
As part of the WASH initiative, the Clean Water Program works to provide safe, accessible water to rural communities in Africa.
Our World Water Day Challenge: Raise $22,000 towards WASH Projects in 2025.
