Since 1997, Bread and Water for Africa® has been working to provide people living in remote rural villages throughout sub-Saharan Africa with ready access to clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing and washing, and saving them (especially young girls) with the backbreaking drudgery of hauling heavy containers of water for miles from unsafe, unprotected sites.

Over the past 25 years, we have dug new wells and refurbished existing ones which have not functioned for years, protected springs, constructed stream water diversion projects and created reservoirs for large-scale agricultural projects.

While the exact number of people who have benefited due to our clean water projects a fair approximation based on the number of projects per year conservatively puts the number at more than four million.

Among our very first projects was a water delivery system that served 10,000 individuals in the Bubukwanga District in western Uganda which is isolated by the Rwenzori Mountain range from the rest of the country. This situation had kept many villages water supply systems in the district in a dangerously outdated condition, forcing residents to collect water from contaminated streams and stagnant pools – both breeding grounds for waterborne diseases, the deadliest of which is cholera.

Through that project, Bread and Water for Africa®, in partnership with the District Water Authority, was able to pipe 370,000 liters (nearly 10,000 gallons) of clean water from mountain streams per day villages with a combined population of more than 13,000 people.

Today, we are still working in Uganda today protecting stream source sites from human and livestock contamination by constructing concrete barriers and installing pipes allowing for the easy – and safe – collection of water. In 2021, we completed 12 projects serving a total of 3,600 households, roughly 15,000 individuals.

Also, last year we completed two water well projects at a health center and a clinic in Ethiopia, serving more than 90,000 people as well as ensuring a steady supply of clean water for medical facilities; in Malawi we supported seven water well projects, serving 1,815 households, or roughly 7,500 individuals; and in Tanzania we refurbished 20 nonfunctioning water wells restoring access to clean water to 35,000 individuals.

In total, in 2021 alone, thanks to the supporters of Bread and Water for Africa®, nearly 150,000 individuals no longer have to worry that they are risking illness, even death, each time they take a drink of water.
