As we step into 2024, Bread and Water for Africa® is celebrating a multitude of mission successes throughout the past year. See all that we were able to achieve thanks to the generosity of our supporters and why we have such gratitude and a vibrant hope for the future.
Bread and Water for Africa® Programs Served More Than 188,000 Individuals Throughout Sub-Saharan Africa This Year
2023 was a busy and productive year for Bread and Water for Africa® – all made possible by our partners in 11 countries including Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, as well as our donors, staff, and volunteers across the country.
Through our programs in clean water, health care, agriculture and food self-sufficiency, education, and orphan care we were able to directly benefit more than 188,000 children, parents, and elders in a myriad of ways – including with lifesaving medical care and clean water projects.
Impact of Our Healthcare Programs in Africa
More than 92,000 individuals received healthcare at 45 facilities with cash grants, medical supplies, wheelchairs, and more in Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, and Malawi.
Through mobile clinics that focus on providing primary care services, more than 15,000 individuals received medical treatment in 125 rural and remote villages.
2023 Clean Water for Africa Projects
Our clean water program completed a total of 54 projects last year, including repairing 24 water wells in Ethiopia, 12 spring water protection projects in Uganda, 10 water wells in Malawi, four water wells in Zambia, three water wells in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and one well in Tanzania.
Today, they are providing an estimated 54,000 individuals with all the clean, safe water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing. This means thousands of people are no longer risking their lives every time they take a drink from possibly contaminated sources, such as lakes and streams.
Improvements in Agriculture and Food Sustainability
In 2023, Bread and Water for Africa’s agriculture/food self-sustainability program benefited more than 37,000 individuals directly and/or indirectly in Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Malawi.
Our partners trained more than 300 smallholder farmers, who in turn shared their increased harvests with their family members. They were even able to generate income by selling their surplus produce at local markets.
Bread and Water for Africa’s Education Impact
Our education program benefited 438 students in Sierra Leone by constructing classrooms and providing school furniture. In addition, 183 students were able to attend school in the Republic of Chad, 115 in Zimbabwe, and 40 in Cameroon.
In Ethiopia, 58,000 students benefited from the shipment of more than 20,000 text and reference books to secondary schools and universities. School desks were also shipped to Ethiopia and Sierra Leone.
Orphan Care in Africa
Last year, Bread and Water for Africa’s orphan care program supported 281 children in Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. These children found a loving home at one of the children’s homes and orphanages we support, as well as those living in foster homes or with relatives through outreach programs.
School Lunch Program in Nairobi
In the Nairobi slum of Kibera, grant funding provided to our partner, the Seed School, for a school lunch program ensured that a total of 189 children were served two nutritious meals every school day – most likely the only actual meals they received.
The Mission Continues in 2024
None of this massive impact would be possible without our compassionate supporters who year after year share their love for impoverished children, families, and elders who rely on Bread and Water for Africa® for their healthcare, clean water, education, and so much more.
We celebrate the enormous strides we’ve made together in 2023, improving the quality of life for over 100,000 people throughout Africa. Poverty, however, remains an issue that needs our attention and resources.
The effects of poverty, whether it’s hunger, limited access to education, indadequate healthcare, lack of clean water or safe, secure housing, are devastating. While the number of poor has decreased in recent years, Africa is still considered to have the highest extreme poverty rates in the world.
Through your support and programs like Bread and Water for Africa’s, however, tangible progress is being made. Let’s not give up, and continue to do good. 2024 can be another year of implementing sustainable solutions that lift up generations for years to come.
We ask for your continued support in our mission to support those who need it most on the continent of Africa. Together, we can make a genuine difference in the lives of hundreds thousands more.
